Add Your Community to the Guide!

A STUDENT PHOTO CHALLENGE

.

  • Grades:       K-8
  • Date:           June 25 – 29, 2018.   ** The artifact entry form will be open until July 31st, 2018. After August 1st, new entries will not be accepted until September.

OBJECTIVES

1. To explore and record favourite places and items in the local neighbouring community.

2.  To share and celebrate the uniqueness and diversity of communities across Canada

3. To help create a unique Social Studies resource for children to help them learn about the land and people of Canada.

.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

This week’s challenge is to take a few minutes to put your students’ work on the map. Just fill out the Artifact Form and share your community with kids across Canada in the first ever Kids’ Guide to Canada – BY Kids, FOR Kids!

.

This week we challenge you to take a half hour class walk around the neighbourhood on one of these last days of June, and challenge your students to take pictures of  places and items that are important to their community.

.

Then upload a few of the class’s favourites to introduce your community to the children of Canada!

.

For a great example, go to the Kids’ Guide map and check out SCHULER ALBERTA. They just joined the project in May,  and did a wonderful job of sharing their community in 10 simple pictures. Thanks Gr 4’s at Schuler School!  (although no need to show students in your photos.)

HOW TO ADD ARTIFACTS to the GUIDE

Go to the “Uploading Artifacts” section of the private teacher’s section on our website to find

  •  the link to the Artifact Entry Form
  •  video #1 explaining how to fill in the form
  •  video #2 explaining how to upload photographs and media

.

HOW TO ADD NEW or ADDITIONAL ARTIFACTS

If you have already uploaded an entry for your class, you can add more content by creating a brand new entry. This new student content will appear as another entry in the very same location. Doing this will make this new entry searchable by locationgrade, topic, and language.  When you click on a location, check the top left corner of each info box to see how many entries are at that location.

.

PREPARATION

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO UPLOAD STUDENT ARTIFACTS TO THE MAP WITHOUT CONFIRMING THAT YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE FOLLOWING 4 ACTIVITIES.

Helpful information on each of these can be found in the Teacher Resources section.

  1. PARENTAL CONSENT – ensure these have been obtained and collected (please save these, as student content will appear in the guide until 2020).
  2. STUDENT SAFETY – ensure no students images are identified by name
  3. RESPECTING COPYRIGHT – ensure no student content contains copyrighted material, unless written permission has been obtained.  Out of necessity, we reserve the right to remove any student content which violates international copyright law.
  4. ATTRIBUTION – ensure the owners of your content have been given credit or “attributed” according to current requirements, including student content.  Please see the videos and information on simple ways to do this.
