OBJECTIVE: To learn about and celebrate the uniqueness and diversity of communities across Canada
CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS: Literacy, Visual Arts, Geography of Canada
ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: This week we are challenging your students to create and send invitations to classes in First Nations, northern, and Quebec schools encouraging them to use the Kids’ Guide to Canada to teach the children of Canada about the land and people of their communities in the language of their choice.
To ensure we send invitations to as many different schools as possible, we will provide teachers with the names and addresses of up to 5 schools in First Nation, French, Métis, Northern, and/or Inuit communities upon request. (Please specify how many schools you would like to invite, and whether your students will be creating invitations in English or in French). We will also provide a sample cover letter for you to send along with your package of student invitations.
The Kids’ Guide to Canada organizers have already sent letters and posters to all of these schools, but we hope invitations from students across Canada will be a tangible demonstration of the interest and openness students have towards learning about their communities and cultures.
